How to Maintain Your Washing Machine for Long-Term Use?

A washing machine is one among the many indispensable pieces of equipment populating a modern home. However, we rarely think about it – until it stops working and we begin to feel like we are back in the Stone Age. Nevertheless, we do spend a considerable amount of time buying one, and so, it only makes sense to give it the care it deserves.

Caring for your washing machine only takes a few simple habits, followed with consistency. With a few simple habits, you can ensure better performance, lower utility costs, and longer durability.

Here’s a straightforward guide on washing machine maintenance:

Start with a Simple Cleaning Routine

The foundation of good maintenance is regular cleaning. Understanding how to clean a laundry machine begins with setting a routine you can actually stick to.

Set a monthly cleaning cycle, which includes running an empty wash cycle and wiping the machine clean. Run an empty wash cycle with warm water and add a washing machine cleaner or a mild descaling solution. This would help eliminate dirt, prevent the accumulation of mineral deposits and detergent residue, and subsequently improve performance.

This cleaning regime misses out the smaller details. The detergent drawers, rubber gaskets, and seals must be cleaned with a soft cloth after wash cycles.

Caring for Different Types of Washing Machines

The front load, the top load, and the twin tub washers are not alike, and their care regimes, thus, must also differ.

If you’re using a twin tub washer, make it a habit to clean both tubs regularly. Wipe the interiors and occasionally run an empty cycle to keep things fresh.

Even simpler is the top-load washer maintenance. Regular cleaning of the lint and the mesh filter, and periodic descaling can maintain performance efficiency.
Now, how about the more complex machine of the three? How do you clean a front-load washer? A front-load washer is more sensitive to moisture. After each wash, leave the door slightly ajar. This allows air to circulate and helps prevent dampness. Unlike the top load washer, the front load washer comes with a rubber gasket. During a wash cycle, this gasket collects water, detergent residue, and lint. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe it clean after every wash cycle. If needed, use a mild cleaner and then dry it out completely. Once a month, run a hot wash cycle as it can help eliminate bacteria.

Prevent Washing Machine Odour Before It Starts

Washing machines can gradually give out an unpleasant odour. It is a common issue and also one of the easiest to prevent.

A simple solution to prevent washing machine odour is to avoid overloading the drum. When the machine is too full, clothes don’t rinse properly, leading to residue buildup. Using too much detergent can have the same effect.

Another simple habit is to remove the clothes promptly once cleaned, and allow the drum to dry before closing the door shut. Cleaning the filter and drainage system regularly will also keep the washer smelling fresh.

Washing Machine Lifespan Tips That Work

We invest a lot of time and money into buying these wonderful machines, and needless to say, we would want them to last.  Here are a few quick tips to increase the life of your washer:

  •  Avoid running machine cycles back-to-back. Short breaks between cycles prevent strain on internal components and reduce the risk of overheating.
  •  Using a washing machine in an area with hard water can result in mineral deposition inside the machine. Prevent this by using a water softener or a descaler.
  • Finally, it’s a good practice to place electronic appliances in well-ventilated, dry areas. For washing machines, this is especially important to prevent rusting.
  • Choosing a level surface to place the machine helps reduce vibrations during operation, as these can damage the internal components in the long run.

Maintaining your washing machines hardly requires any effort, but what it does need is consistency. Once you understand how to clean washing machine systems and build a routine around it, the process becomes second nature.

Just a few simple steps, and your washing machine will continue to work for years.

Everyday Washing Machine Care Tips

  • Use just the right amount of detergent, as per care instructions.
  • Clean out the lint filters from time to time.
  • Keep the machine stable and level.
  • Place the machine in a dry, ventilated area of your home.
  • Wipe the drum and rubber seals after use.

FAQs –

How often should I clean my washing machine?

It is recommended you clean your machine at least once a month. However, in homes with heavy usage, a bi-weekly cleaning routine may be more effective.

How to clean a laundry machine that smells bad?

Run a hot cycle with a cleaning agent, clean the filter and drainage system, and wipe down internal surfaces. Regular maintenance helps prevent washing machine odor from returning.

Can using too much detergent damage my washing machine?

Yes, excessive detergent can lead to residue buildup inside the drum and pipes. This can affect cleaning efficiency, cause long-term damage, and also cause unpleasant odours to develop.

Do top load and front load machines require different maintenance?

Yes. While both require regular cleaning, a front-load washer needs extra attention to the door gasket and moisture control. A top-load machine generally requires less maintenance but still benefits from periodic drum and filter cleaning.
